Pubs Need Poker To Make Profit, Say Bar Developers - 2004-02-09
Pubs would struggle to make a profit these days if it weren't for poker machines, say a Palmerston North couple wanting to build a tavern complex in the city.

Vivien Wilson, co-owner of Cress Holdings, said the proposed Kaimanawa Tavern needed a gambling machine licence to ensure its viability.

"Most bars have them now. It's hard to make a profit without them."

Mrs Wilson and her husband, Peter, were among those who made submissions to a Palmerston North City Council hearing on proposed rules for poker machines in the city.

Pass-dredging costs rising so soon? - 2004-02-09
A recent editorial and letter have suggested that allowing poker games at the Sarasota Kennel Club would turn the race track into a quasi-casino. This is just not true.

Poker is a game of skill, much like bridge. Yes, there is an element of luck in the draw of the cards, but that "luck" evens out over time because of the randomness of the deals. Over time the most
skilled poker players will always win.

Your editorial referred to "high-stake poker." A $2 bet limit is far from high stakes. In fact, this is a very low-level bet in a serious poker game, and almost all legal poker facilities have much higher-limit games.
