We were doing our school work. Barry was playing poker.

Thirteen years old and the kid was cleaning up in five-card draw and seven-card stud.

We were working paper routes, baby-sitting, stocking shelves at Walgreens. Minimum wage was $1.60.

Barry was eyeing his hole card in house games. He was beating juniors and seniors, college boys. He was walking home on a typical night $30 richer, maybe $50.

William T. Low, 82; 'premier criminal-case judge' - 2004-02-08
A composed courtroom demeanor, which inspired such names as "Mr. Cool" and "The Ice Man," became the hallmark of retired Superior Court Judge William T. Low.

"You would never want to play poker with him," said Superior Court Judge William Kennedy. "You couldn't tell what he was thinking. He had the icy neutrality of a good judge."

Judge Low, who distinguished himself as a prosecutor before serving on the Municipal Court and Superior Court benches in San Diego, died of a heart attack Tuesday. He was 82.
