Most charges dropped in beating case - 2004-02-07
A district justice on Friday dropped the most serious charges against two men who prosecutors claimed attacked an Allentown bar manager during a video poker extortion scheme.

After a daylong preliminary hearing, District Justice David Leh dropped most of the charges recommended by a state grand jury against Stephen Bodnar, 54, formerly of Hellertown and Bethlehem, and Dale Scott Houser, 38, of Bethlehem.

Besides assault charges, the men had been charged with running a corrupt organization.

Gaming Sweep Nets 31 Illegal Machines - 2004-02-07
Operation Clean Sweep, which targeted illegal gambling in Allegany County, ended with the seizure of 31 video gaming machines and $6,500 in cash.

Thirteen video poker machines were confiscated at the Potomac River Sportsman's Club, Inc. on Pershing Street; three machines at the Elks Lodge on South Centre Street; five machines at Christy's North End Tavern on Columbia Avenue; one at the DAM Tavern on North Centre Street; two at Brewski's Sports Bar on River Avenue; three at the Goodfellowship Club on Virginia Avenue; and four at the Midland Fire Hall. Money was also seized at each location.
