Thieves Target Pokies - 2004-02-07
Thieves broke into the Ex-Services Club at 2.30 on Monday morning, robbing the earnings of six poker machines in record time.

"They were in and out in five minutes," said manager Gary Dwyer who was alerted to the break-in by the security company at 2.36am.

By the time he arrived at the club 12 minutes later, the thieves had scarpered. There wasn't as much as a red light disappearing in the distance.

"They weren't worried about the alarm," said Mr Dwyer. "They went straight up this row and opened the lot.

Gov treads murky waters on gambling - 2004-02-07
The General Assembly’s champions of gambling presented a massive expansion plan Thursday.

Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie, and Sen. Denny Jacobs, D-East Moline, want more capacity for casinos, slot machines at horse racing tracks, two more casino licenses for Chicago and southern Cook County, and legalized video poker gambling.

It’s the same plan they formulated last spring.

It doesn’t include a casino for Rockford, but Mayor Doug Scott said he would contact Lang and Jacobs and lobby for one as part of the legislation.
