'Junebug' carves own niche from dad's driving lessons - 2004-02-16
Dale Earnhardt Sr. had a monopoly on all the hard, unyielding nicknames. He was The Intimidator, Iron Head and The Man in Black.

He no more sentimental than a lug wrench.

He named his son, Dale Jr., Junebug. It was a term of affection. It also was something no one would have called Dale Sr. without an ear-to-ear grin on his face and a seat behind the wheel of a getaway rocket.

Nothing the son did was ever good enough for the father. Old Dale was raised that way by his daddy, Ralph, and it was good enough for him.

Geologist digs into miners’ story - 2004-02-16
His fingers gliding as deftly as a poker dealer’s, Howard Brooks shuffles through 150 million years of geologic history in about thirty seconds. His right hand halts for a few seconds at one milestone, then leaps forward a few pages and a few thousand millennia to the next.

First, Brooks attends the birth of gold. He describes the bubbling mixture that bore the precious metal, a percolating mineral soup boiled by masses of magma that cooled and became the granitic cores of the Elkhorn and Wallowa mountains.
