3000 pokies to be axed - 2004-02-16
Three thousand poker machines will be "ripped out" of hotels and clubs if a conscience vote in State Parliament endorses a 20 per cent cutback in the number of gaming machine.

Premier Mike Rann will personally urge all MPs to support the reduction in a move described as a "test of his leadership".

Gambling Minister Jay Weatherill will draw up legislation over the next few weeks to reduce poker machines from 15,000 to 12,000, in line with recommendations of the Independent Gambling Authority report into poker machine numbers.

Rann bid to ditch 3000 pokies - 2004-02-16
In an Australian first, South Australian Premier Mike Rann has challenged MPs to support controversial laws to remove 3000 gambling machines from hotels and clubs across the state.

Mr Rann announced yesterday he would allow a conscience vote on the issue.

The legislation proposes to reduce poker machine numbers from 15,000 to 12,000 to help address problem gambling in the state. There are an estimated 22,000 problem gamblers in South Australia.
