It's hard to decide which is more distressing -- that some Texas leaders see video gambling and sales tax raises as a realistic solutions to school funding woes, or that Gov. Rick Perry believes that struggling schools will improve if the state invests more in them after they've pulled themselves up by their bootstraps.

Sure, it's encouraging that the governor wants to put millions of new dollars into Texas' public schools. What nags about his various financial incentives "to reward schools that demonstrate student progress" is that they just don't seem geared to help the neediest schools over very real hurdles.

Police seize more 8-liners in latest raid - 2004-02-13
Police closed down another illegal gambling operation Wednesday — the third in a week.

Officers confiscated 38 8-liners from Sam's game room on Callaghan Road Wednesday morning.

No arrests were made during the bust, although police say charges are pending against four people.

No customers were cited for gambling at the establishment.

Police officials said they will hold the machines until they can be sold or destroyed.
