House panel votes to retain video gambling - 2004-02-12
A plan to repeal video gambling was rejected Wednesday by a South Dakota House committee.

The State Affairs Committee voted 9-4 to kill the bill after opponents noted that voters statewide have three times decided not to get rid of the video lottery.

HB1170 would have repealed the video lottery and increased the state sales tax by under a penny on the dollar to replace the lost revenue. An identical bill was rejected last week by a Senate committee.

Nevada's gambling casinos reported profits of $845.3 million in the last fiscal year ending June 30, rebounding from a $33.5 million loss the previous year.

The rebound from Sept. 11 played a primary role in the increase, said Brian Gordon, a principal with Applied Analysis.
