Generally it's a group of guys sitting around playing the game, relaxing with a few beers and a box of cigars.

But sometimes it's a group of women playing for pennies, and sharing the highs and lows of their lives and the highs and lows of the game.

Or a bunch of high school students playing with Starburst candy as the chips.

Whatever the scenario, millions of people are playing poker, a card game that's lately been revitalized, partly because of ESPN's broadcast of The World Series of Poker in Las Vegas and telecasts of the World Poker Tour on the Travel Channel.

Long awaited gambling bill debuts - 2004-02-12
After weeks of listening to all sides of the gambling debate in a number of meetings and public hearings, lawmakers today will unveil the first draft of a bill that leaders say could considerably change the state's gaming laws.

Rep. Scott Raecker, R-Urbandale, who leads the House gambling subcommittee, said the bill would be a "work in progress" that will address a majority of the gambling questions that have been on the table since the beginning of the session.

Raecker promised the proposal unveiled Thursday won't be a "shell bill" with few details.
