Lottery compensation under review - 2004-02-12
The Oregon Lottery Commission will initiate a series of public proceedings this week to consider changing the compensation that bars, taverns, restaurants and others receive for video poker machines.

The five-member commission is expected to meet Thursday to hear invited testimony, including a report from Bob Whelan of ECONorthwest, an economic consulting firm with offices in Portland and Eugene.

The firm was asked whether businesses with video poker machines had more employees than those without them. The report concluded they have fewer employees, not more.

The race to find alternative uses for the Tomb of Doom is heating up - 2004-02-12
With the Grizzlies and the Memphis Tigers making plans to relocate, the race to come up with alternative uses for the Tomb of Doom is heating up. It's no secret that Lakes Entertainment wants to try its casino luck at the Pyramid. Wednesday, the gaming company's officials gave county commissioners the latest update on their attempts.

Lakes Entertainment's feasibility study says lots of money would come from gambling at the Pyramid. Joe Calloway, Lakes Entertainment said, "In a best case scenario it could mean up to 90 million a year in direct financial benefit to the local community." At
the presentation, attorneys told commissioners they
are considering a Pyramid plan that would seek limited gaming like poker and other card games.
