Video-Poker Industry Has Lot Riding On Monitoring Decision - 2004-02-11
Within a few months, State Police will make a decision that might end up costing a lot for Louisiana's video-poker operators - and could drive some out of business. Although the issue is far from the public eye, an industry lobbyist compares it to the 1996 referendums in which parishes voted whether to outlaw the gambling machines.

The state is looking at four systems for monitoring the machines on a statewide basis to avoid tampering and to make sure taxes are paid. If the current system operator, International Game Technology, wins the contract, there's no problem.

'Amarillo Slim' pleads guilty to assault - 2004-02-11
Legendary poker player "Amarillo Slim" has pleaded
guilty to three misdemeanor assault charges in a case concerning a 12-year-old girl.

Thomas Austin Preston Jr., 75, the poker's player's birth name, was sentenced to two years deferred adjudication and fined $4,000 by an Amarillo judge on Tuesday.

In August, a Randall County grand jury indicted him on three felony counts of indecency with a child by contact, accusing him of touching the girl on three dates in early 2003.
