Gambling: a High-Risk Addiction - 2004-02-11
Though for some people gambling at a casino or racetrack may be an entertaining way to spend an afternoon, an increased number of people are finding they can’t control their habit. Out-of-control gambling is on the rise, and is now recognized as a psychiatric disorder and a challenge for mental health treatment. According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, about 1% of American adults, nearly 3 million people,are compulsive gamblers.

The March issue of the Harvard Mental Health Letter says compulsive gamblers are constantly thinking about past bets, planning the next ones, and all the while searching for the money to support their addiction.

Suspect In Gambling Case Surrenders - 2004-02-11
The third suspect in a gambling investigation turned himself in to authorities Monday. Mark Smith surrendered to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department, said Bill Wargo, chief investigator for the Elkhart County Prosecutor's office. Smith has been wanted on a warrant since Friday and sought for investigation since Super Bowl Sunday, when authorities searched three bars owned by Smith and Tom Thalheimer.

Smith, 43, of 52650 Park Ave., is faced with five counts of professional gambling and three counts of corrupt business influence. A judge set his bond at $250,000.
