Golf course killings connected to gambling - 2004-01-09
The shooting at Pali Golf Course that culminated in the death of two men Wednesday was the result of a turf war between security forces that provide protection for illegal gambling houses, according to a police source with knowledge of the investigation.

The shooting started after the rival groups argued over money, said a victim's family member and the police source, who asked not to be named because the investigation is ongoing. Also contributing to the violence, police said, was an argument over the logistics of providing security for the gambling houses.

Rose downplays betting woes - 2004-01-09

In a 20-minute interview with USA TODAY launching
the promotional campaign for My Prison Without Bars, baseball's banished icon gave several puzzling contradictions in the aftermath of his admission to betting on baseball as manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

• Explaining why he didn't continue treatment for his gambling problem in 1989, Rose said he "was a recreational-type gambler." He acknowledges he still bets at race tracks, but doesn't consider it gambling on sports.
