Budget deficits, gambling await legislative session - 2004-01-09
Yet another round of yawning budget shortfalls and the specter of an emotional gambling dispute await lawmakers embarking on a politically charged election year session Monday.

With control of state government divided between the parties and court battles being waged, few expect the Legislature to make sweeping changes this session.

"Everything is in limbo," said House Speaker Chris Rants, R-Sioux City, who will gavel lawmakers into session Monday morning.

Deputies Bust Game Parlor For Illegal Gambling - 2004-01-09
The Tarrant County Sheriff's Department has cracked down on another video game parlor it says permitted illegal gambling.

Sheriff's deputies seized roughly 100 machines and cash from the Pot of Gold near Kennedale on Thursday night.

The sheriff says undercover deputies found the parlor was giving away prizes greater than the law permits. "I've said all along if you don't stop, if you don't get out of the business, this is what's gonna happen," said Sheriff Dee Anderson.
