By the time he reached his 30s, Andy was more jaded than most. He worked doing media relations for the state treasurer’s office, and had taken on the bad habits and attitudes of both journalists and politicos.

“I had taken the attitude that it was all a big crock. You got used to seeing so many just absolute vipers and so much dishonesty, you couldn’t really take anything seriously,” Andy said. “It sort of gave me the license to do whatever I wanted to do. I figured if you didn’t like what I was doing, then you could just go take a flying leap.”

Most nights Andy sat at a video poker machine at the Red Carpet, beer and cigarette in hand.

Gunmen rob Akron charity event, take $20,000 - 2004-01-05
The robbers were two men with guns, Merrill said, but he thinks a third partner was waiting in a getaway car.

No one was hurt, he said, "but it was close. They stuck a gun in my wife's face. She has a heart condition. She's OK today, but we're keeping an eye on her."

He said all of the games were forms of poker and about 120 people were present when the robbery occurred.

A police report was not available last night, and the Akron police spokeswoman did not return calls.
