Region's Casinos Most Profitable In Country - 2004-01-04
Jeff Hartmann says he doesn't mind that Mohegan Sun is not the biggest casino in the world, so long as it is the most lucrative. Hartmann, executive vice president of finance and chief financial officer, has watched Mohegan Sun overtake Las Vegas' Bellagio as the most profitable stand-alone casino in North America, as shown in analyst reports.
But success - and profits - can be fleeting, and Mohegan Sun executives have no time to rest on last year's numbers. They are continually fine-tuning their property to ensure they are getting the most revenue out of the 291,000 square feet of gaming space.
Revenue per square foot is one of several measures the Mohegans use to track their casino's performance. The casino took in about $3,600 per square foot of gaming space in the last fiscal year and is moving to increase its so-called “efficiency” in 2004.
In October, the Mohegans closed their poker room and installed 261 slot machines in the 7,000-square-foot space it occupied in the Casino of the Earth.
