Van Patten Wagers on Reality Poker - 2004-01-04
Actor Vince Van Patten has inked a deal to create and host a reality show that intends to capitalize on TV's current craze for poker.

"Poker Dogs" would bring together professional poker players in an elimination-style contest series to compete for a big grand-prize pot. The project is set up at LMNO Prods., which is shopping the project to network and cable buyers.

Van Patten has already generated a cult following on the TV poker circuit as co-host of Travel Channel's "World Poker Tour" series. He's also a close friend of LMNO chief Eric Schotz.

Giving what is probably the ultimate proof that Americans would prefer watching someone else do something on TV instead of doing it themselves, televised poker is on the rise. At least four networks have anted in the latest sports craze that's not really a sport, following in the grand tradition of televised Scrabble, bass fishing and golf.

Bravo has its latest version of Celebrity Poker Showdown on Tuesday night, NBC plans a high-stakes game on Super Bowl day, the Travel Channel is getting its best ratings from poker, and Fox SportsNet created Showdown at the Sands.

Judging from a few episodes of Celebrity Poker, it may just be the dullest thing on television. And that includes a quick glance at fourth-grade painting classes on the education channel.
