Study: Video poker payouts high - 2004-01-30
Secretary of State Bill Bradbury issued a study Thursday claiming state payments to Oregon's video poker retailers far surpass payouts in other jurisdictions with similar lottery games.

An industry group representing bars and taverns immediately attacked the finding, saying it is based on an "illegitimate" comparison between Oregon and lotteries in eight Canadian provinces.

Bradbury's office conducted the study at the request of the state Lottery Commission, which is preparing to draw up a new contract with the 1,900 bars and taverns that have video poker games.

Tournament play is different - 2004-01-30
For the past few weeks, readers of this column have been exposed to quite an enthusiastic view of tournament poker because of the financial and emotional rewards I got winning two tournaments the 2004 Australasian Poker Championships.

Tournament poker can indeed be rewarding, and for the right player it can be so on a fairly regular basis. But success requires a considerably different skill set -- and a different kind of emotional stability -- than that required for money play.
