Battle Over Synagogue Location Heads to Court - 2004-01-29
For years Orthodox Jews have come to a synagogue in Surfside, Fla., to pray, but local leaders are insisting they leave the two-block business district saying prayer in a "for profit" zone violates the law and doesn't help the town's bottom line. The ongoing battle is now being waged in a federal appeals court.
The synagogue calls the zoning law unconstitutional and says it lets poker clubs, fraternal organizations and even addiction recovery groups rent in the commercial zone, but specifically bars religious groups from the area. This is an exclusion that the U.S. Justice Department says smacks of discrimination and violates a three-year-old federal law.
