A public investigation into the financial management
of Liverpool City Council in relation to the Oasis development was told the council got involved in the
project to provide new facilities for the community and local Razorbacks basketball team.
Liverpool City Council Mayor George Paciullo said the council had committed land and a maximum $25 million to building a basketball arena as part of the project at Woodward Park in Liverpool.
The project also included a 35,000-seat football stadium, ice rink, water park, licensed club and apartment complex.
It was to be a joint venture between the Canterbury
Leagues Club and the council. But the leagues club pulled out of the deal last April when it could not obtain a club and poker machine licence.
