The number of poker machines in pubs and clubs is dropping after years of constant growth, figures from the Department of Internal Affairs show.

The number of gaming machines reached a high of 25,221 halfway through last year, after uninterrupted increases since pokies were first licensed in 1988.

In the second half of 2003, the number of machines dropped to 22,734 after the rate of growth had slowed in the first half.

In Otago, the number of machines fell slightly from 1332 in June 2003 to 1299 at the end of December.
