Poker Addicts? You Can Bet on It - 2004-01-13
Penny-ante or sky's-the-limit, poker almost always involves betting and - for the young, impressionable
or addicted - that can be trouble.
"It gives us a lot of pause," said James Maney, executive director of the Albany- based New York Council on Problem Gambling, a nonprofit organization funded by the state Office of Mental Health. Gambling, including poker, is flourishing, Maney said. "Every day, there's something more."
Maney said a 10-year "prevalence" study issued in the mid-'90s showed the rate of problem gambling in New York had jumped 73 percent. Anecdotal evidence suggests no slowdown.
