Vegas, Baby: TV Bets on Gambling - 2004-01-12
The Travel Channel's "World Poker Tour" has been a success with viewers. Bravo's "Celebrity Poker Showdown" is cha-chinging! for that channel, with hot competitors such as Ben Affleck and Matt Damon attracting viewers. And soon to be launched,
according to an announcement late last year: the Casino and Gaming Television (search) cable network, devoted exclusively to gambling.

"This is a trend that's going to continue," said Kristin Veitch, a TV columnist for E! Online. "The guys need something to watch while the women are watching how to make over their homes."

But not everyone is happy that card sharks seem to be the next big thing in cable programming. Medical experts say gambling can be as addictive as drugs and shouldn't be glamorized.

Landmark Vegas casino shuts down after federal agents seize cash - 2004-01-12
Some 900 Binion's workers are left without work after owner Becky Binion Behnen consented to close the property until she can come up with enough money to reopen it. Meanwhile, her gambling license has been suspended.

Gamblers watched in amazement Friday night as US marshals shut down the casino floor. The agents were enforcing a court order against the property, which has not paid about three million dollars in pension and health insurance benefits for an estimated 400 union employees.

Binion's has been a downtown Las Vegas fixture for 52 years and is home to the wildly popular World Series of Poker.
