Goal for Rome: more jobs - 2004-01-01
When 17-year-old Ross Young hangs out, it typically
means he's playing poker at a friend's house.

That's because there's not much for teenagers in Rome, the Rome Free Academy junior and Lee resident said.

"Basically, we have Wal-Mart," Young said. "We need more things to do."

From Young to new Mayor James Brown, people living in the city and its surrounding communities talked recently about what's in store for Rome in 2004 -- and what they want to see this year.

While Young wanted to see more hangouts for teenagers, jobs, as usual, were on the minds of many. And when talking about jobs in Rome, the talk quickly turns to Griffiss Business and Technology Park.

Thousands Cheer New Year in Vegas - 2004-01-01
The celebrations were still wild and cheery despite cold weather, extensive police presence and previous reports that the country's gambling capital may have been a target of al-Qaida.

Partygoers, many clad in gaudy costumes, toted tall drinks and six-packs of beer. One young man was carried through the packed strip of asphalt by friends.

Sixth-grade teacher Bob Kelly reveled in the celebration near The Mirage with his wife, friends and newly won $1,000.

"What better way to end 2003," Kelly, of Newport Beach, Calif., said of the royal flush he had just won on a video poker machine. "I'm going to go back in there and win another one. What better way to start 2004!"
